Abundance as Enough
The Incomplete Thoughts Series
Welcome to the Incomplete Thoughts Series
…because sometimes ideas are worthwhile, even if they’re not complete.
I just read (on a tarot website) an interpretation of abundance as enough — enough food, shelter, and the ability to do the things you love.
Abundance in spirituality has consistently made me uneasy, especially when interpreted through a western lens that often focuses specifically on money, and in-turn victim blames people who don’t have enough (ignoring the glaring sociological factors that determine who does and does not have enough in society).
But this sense of abundance resonated, because it didn’t feel greedy or materialistic or like it was preaching some sort of prosperity gospel — it was speaking to power that which we all want and deserves.
I think about Jenny Odell’s book How to Do Nothing in which she references the chant/song designed to advocate for the 8-hour workday in the late 19th century:
“Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight hours for what we will!”
In this demand for work-life balance, you get a similar sense of abundance, specifically the space, energy, and freedom to be able to do whatever we please, hopefully that which we love…
